Shen Ling™ (Shen Ling Bai Zhu Wan) is a traditional Chinese formula, which has been used since the Song Dynasty to strengthen the spleen, harmonize the stomach, and remove dampness. Dr. Misha Cohen has used this formula in her clinic successfully for many years for digestive disorders especially loose stools, diarrhea and associated symptoms.
This formula is used in cases of spleen deficiency with coldness and is a formula for digestive disorders. The symptoms associated with this formula include anorexia, lack of appetite, loose stools, fatigue, difficulty concentrating, fullness and bloating in the epigastric or abdominal area, and weakness in the muscles. It may be used for mild HIV related loose stools that contain no pathogens, loose stools related to chemotherapy, and is an excellent formula for the resolution of loose stools following an acute episode of viral related or bacterial diarrhea in which the spleen and stomach qi have been weakened and the individual is trying to regain strength.
It has been traditionally used for children who have loose stools and/or underweight with digestive problems. It has been used for children with difficulty concentrating due to spleen deficiency. The usual pulse associated with this formula is of the deficiency type and the tongue is pale and swollen, possibly with a mild greasy white fur. The face is pale.
Codonopsis (dang shen) strengthens spleen and tonifies Qi. Poria (fu ling) eliminates dampness, stops diarrhea, and strengthens the spleen. White atractylodes (bai zhu) strengthens the spleen and eliminates dampness. Baked licorice (zhi gan cao) tonifies the spleen and astringes dampness. Citrus peel (chen pi) strengthens the spleen, regulates the central Qi, and drains dampness. Dolichos seed (bai bian dou) stops diarrhea and strengthens the spleen. Cardamon (sha ren) regulates the central Qi, reduces nausea and vomiting, strengthens the stomach and drains dampness. Lotus seed (lian zi) strengthens the spleen and stops diarrhea. Platycodon (jie geng) guides the herbs upwards in the formula. Coix (yi yi ren) strengthens the spleen, stops diarrhea, eliminates dampness, and promotes urination.
This formula should be taken with warm ginger or green tea for best efficacy. Also, the diet should include mostly cooked foods and soups, white rice or congee, sweet foods such as carrot soups and squashes, and no spicy foods or purgative substances such as coffee or purgative herbs.
