Transcutaneous Vagal Nerve Stimulation

iPad with Vagus nerve guide

Activation of the Vagus nerve is an essential aspect or restoring the Migrating Motor Complex in the digestive tract, to promote bowel regularity and prevent relapse of SIBO and other dysbiotic states. While there are many ways to promote Vagal nerve activity,
stimulation via the external ear using electronic devices is a safe and easy way to self treat, that has been shown to increase the “relaxation response” of the parasympathetic nervous system and reduce fight-or-flight stress responses driven by the sympathetic nervous system.

A study from 2019 from the University of Leeds demonstrated that self-administered non-invasive transcutaneous vagus nerve stimulation (TENS) via the outer ear, boosted “rest and digest” parasympathetic activity and reduced “fight or flight” sympathetic activity in a cohort of adults. Therapy was conducted for 15 minutes per day, for a two week period.

This handout will walk you through how to use this therapy at home, step-by-step.
